Dr. Tony Daniel passes away
An era of commitment, dedication and enthusiasm with regard to Indian Athletics came to an end with the sad and untimely demise of Dr. Tony Daniel, a man who stood for the best cause of the promotion of athletics at state and national level. On Wednesday morning (25 April 2018), he felt some discomfort and was taken to hospital, but before reaching hospital he breathed his last following a massive heart attack. He was 66.
Dr. Tony Daniel was the Joint Secretary and Chairman of the Technical Committee of Athletics Federation of India(AFI) and also the Executive Vice President of Kerala State Athletics Association.
Born in Ernakulam(Kerala) on 17January 1952, Dr. Tony represented Kerala State and University on many occasions at the national championships both in junior and senior categories between 1968 and 1972. He was the state sprint champion in 1970 and held the record for many years. One of his district records stood unbreakable and invincible for 30 years. Having obtained a doctorate in in physical education ,Dr. Tony retired as the Head of the Department after 30 years of service with St. Xavier’s College for Women , Aluva, Kerala.
He served as the Secretary of Kerala State Athletics Association from 1995 to 2000 and was the Executive Vice President till his demise. Athletics had witnessed unprecedented growth and meticulous execution during his tenure. He was associated with the Kerala State Sports Council on various capacities including member of standing committee and organised numerous state, university, inter university, national and international competitions with impeccable perfection ,during his life-time.
As a qualified IAAF International Technical Official (ITO) and Lecturer, Tony sir served as the Deputy Competition Manager(Athletics) in the Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010 and Competition Director (Athletics) in South Asian Games, Guwahati 2016 and took key role in organising many international championships held in India and abroad.
The Chief Architect who modernised Kerala athletics and also a mentor of many of the Kerala’s officials and athletes, he will be missed very much by everyone associated in Kerala and Indian athletics. He always kept decorum in his dealings which received a great respect to the discipline of athletics.
Asian Athletics Association, Athletics Federation of India condoled Tony sir’s death and recalled his contributions to the sport.
“ Tony Daniel was a dedicated international technical official and familiar face to the Asian family in many of our Asian events. On behalf of our President and members of the council of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), we send our condolences to his dear wife and family and may God give them strength and courage during this moment of bereavement,” said Maurice R Nicholas, AAA Secretary -Treasure , in his message.
“ Tony was an experienced member of the AFI family and he will be missed a lot. On behalf of AFI, I would like to express our deepest condolences to his family” said Adille J Sumariwalla, President AFI.
“I have lost a close friend of years.He was always there with me playing a major role in the conduct of all major competitions in India over the years. I will miss him a lot” said C K Valson, Secretary General, AFI.
