Prof. R. Ramakrishnan Nair, passes away.

Prof. R Ramakrishnan Nair, who was associated with the formation of Kerala Athletics Association in the early 50’s passes away in Thiruvananthapuram after a brief illness. He was 97.

Prof. Ramakrishnan Nair started his career in physical education after his studies in YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai. He joined as Physical Education Director in Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur and later moved to University College, Thiruvananathpuram from where he retired in 1974.

Prof. Nair played a stellar role in the formation of Kerala Amateur Athletics Association. He was the second secretary of the Association from 1957 to 1959. During his tenure the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram , which had a status of a pond, was converted to a competition stadium.  24th National Athletics Championship was conducted here in this stadium, from 12 to 15 February 1959.  Sri. Milkha Singh participated in this nationals and he won 200m and 400m in great style. Milkha represented India in Rome Olympics in the next year and created history.

Prof. Nair was very active till his late eighty’s. He was also the Senior Vice President of Badminton Association of India. He served Kerala Football Association as the secretary  during his hay days. He was involved in the organization of all sporting activities which has happened in the capital city. He was a qualified technical official in athletics and was a key officials in all the national level competitions held in Thiruvananthapuram.
